Normally the movies are a massive betrayal of the essence of the game and downright suck! For once, a movie from a video game stays true to form and is quite enjoyable. This was achievable because the director and executive team made the decision to bring in a consultant to advise and Detective Pikachu is a spin-off; not the mainline component Pokemon, with which many players have an emotional connection.
This gave the director more freedom and also a safety net if things got off the rails. Quite often filmmakers take their own tangent and things go awry much to the chagrin of fans and the game’s creators, fortunately, this was not the case.
Detective Pikachu is a delightful super-sleuth tasked with finding his former Pokemon partner Harry Goodman. He does this with the help of Harry’s son Tim. Detective Pikachu and Tim chase clues through the streets of Ryme City, a live-action world populated by a mix of human and pokemon. They unmask a plot threatening to destroy the peace between humans and pokemon, which would bring the Pokemon universe to a calamitous end.
